SEO Fundamentals

A New Category For The Blog

I recently realized that most people we are talking to about Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing have no idea what are the fundamentals of this activity. I decided to start this new blog  category into which I will be writing a series of posts.

Any subject has its own basics or fundamentals. Experts in that subject are experts in large part because they have so well mastered these fundamentals that they are operating in their field without even having to think about the basics them anymore.

They often make what they are doing look so easy that to people unfamiliar with their field, looking from the outside in, the expert’s mastery of the fundamentals is not apparent. However, this mastery of fundamentals is what usually separates the experts from the amateurs.

I believe if website owners understood knew what the fundamentals of SEO were, it would help them get those fundamentals deployed to their sites.

The SEO Fundamentals

Here’s our take on what are these fundamentals of SEO. Notice: Our take on this is slanted towards the needs of small and medium sized business websites as this is who are our customers. I am going to write a post on each of these things.

  1. KEYWORD ANALYSIS
A professional keyword analysis has been done using the appropriate software.
  2. PHYSICAL OPTMIZATION
The site has been physically optimized using the results of the keyword analysis, at least as far as the minimum parts to optimize: TITLE, META Keyword, META Description, H1 tags, and first content paragraph.
  3. BACKLINK CAMPAIGN
Some time is being spent each week — by someone who knows what they are doing — to develop backlinks to the site.
  4. CONTENT UPDATES AND ADDITIONS
At least once a week existing content is updated and new content is added.
  5. PUBLICITY
There is some kind of publicy actions — even if it’s just a simple press release — happening at least once a quarter. Monthly would be better.
  6. FOR PRODUCTS – GOOGLE BASE
For sites that have products, these have been tied in to Google Base.
(Click here for more about Google Base.)

So, that’s a start. You can use it a a checklist for your site. More to come!
